At his press briefing on Saturday, Donald Trump made the claim that he may have saved "billions" of lives with his actions to mitigate the current pandemic. That of course is a ridiculous assertion, but let's just take a look at a couple of things.
First of all, the United States only has a population of 330 million. So is he suggesting that what he has allegedly done could save people living beyond the borders of our country? There is absolutely no evidence to support that.
Second, let's go back and look at the statement he made on February 28th. That was at a time when Trump was still downplaying the threat of the virus, despite urgent warnings, and he made the claim that Coronavirus would disappear "like a miracle".
The very next day, the United States recorded its first death related to the virus. As of April 19th, there are now 40,575 reported deaths in the U.S. due to the Coronavirus outbreak. That's an increase of 4 million percent from the time of the first death.
Trump's daily briefings have taken the place of the rallies he can't stage now due to the lockdowns, and he uses them to make false assertions and prop up his actions. The media should not be giving these wide coverage and should diligently point out the inaccuracies, mistatements, and outright lies put forth by Trump.
The president's response thus far has been poor and may actually have impeded efforts to combat the virus. But he employs the tactics of tyrants by using misleading claims and by misdirecting attention from his failings. The people of this country should not be fooled by these diversions and should continue to hold him and the Republican party accountable for their actions.
