Diversion Alert: U.S. Intelligence Investigating if Coronavirus Started in a Chinese Lab

According to a report from CNN, U.S. Intelligence agencies are investigating whether the Coronavirus originated from a laboratory in China rather than the market in Wuhan.  There is currently no evidence that the virus was artificially created and/or part of a biological warfare initiative.  But intelligence officials are looking for answers on how it got started.

It should be noted that the Chinese Lab allegation is part of a conspiracy theory put forward by multiple people on the far-right who are Trump sympathizers.  The president has also diligently worked on purging the intelligence community of detractors and has put people in place that are loyal to him and his administration.  This investigation could very well have been ordered by him or someone else in his cabinet to redirect attention away from his mismanagement of the Coronavirus response.

That's not to suggest that a thorough investigation is not warranted.  A better understanding of how the virus originated could help in the case of future outbreaks.  And if this did originate from a Chinese lab (as there is at least some credible evidence), that must be addressed in the appropriate manner.  But Trump likes to capitalize on situations like this to divert attention from his own administration which has been riddled with controversy since taking office.  He and his supporters also tend to re-write and/or invent facts to serve their purpose.

An investigation makes sense, but it should be for the purpose of uncovering the facts of how the virus originated and should not be politically motivated or used to cover up Trump's failings in handling the current crisis.  Since the Republicans refuse to hold Trump accountable and since the Democrats have been ineffectual, the people must keep their eyes open and call out inappropriate actions as well as threats to our free and Democratic system.
