The results from Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election will be released soon which seem to be causing Donald Trump to grow increasingly more agitated. In an interview with Maria Bartiromo from FOX Business Network, Trump made the following statements:
This finds Trump once again attacking--also failing to understand--the institutions of the government he is supposed to be leading. The Justice Department is part of the Executive Branch and is responsible for enforcement of the law and administration of justice in the United States. But this department is not subservient to the president, instead acting as one of the checks and balances in our system. The Justice Department holds no one above the law including the president, and it is their job and their duty to see that justice is done.
It is true that Robert Mueller was not elected to his position as investigator. But he was appointed by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein who was appointed by Attorney General Jeff Sessions who was appointed by Trump. Sessions has since stepped down and Trump has expressed his regret over making that appointment, but that is primarily because Sessions carried out his job appropriately and placed his loyalty to the laws above his loyalty to Trump.
Trump is not the monarch he wishes himself to be and he cannot command government officials to fall in line and shield him from any consequences of the law. The job of the president is to execute the laws of the land, but the person who holds that office is also just as much subjected to those laws. There is a separation of the Justice Department from the president just as the Judicial and Legislative branches are separated from one another. And each is responsible for making sure that the other follows the law and does not threaten our Democracy. This is a fundamental aspect of our government and crucial to protect it from slipping into tyranny as the Founding Fathers intended.
Trump also claims, yet again, that he had the greatest election victory in the history of the country trying to suggest that he has the will of the people on his side. But this claim is completely false. He actually had a very narrow margin of victory that came down to three states--Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin--which he barely won. He also has the lowest overall approval rating of any president since 1937 according to Gallup, even though his numbers have edged up over the past year. But to suggest that Mueller is thwarting the will of the people as Trump is clearly attempting to do, is another of his many false claims.
This is yet another example of Trump returning to the tactics of a despot, attacking Democratic institutions that he feels are working against him in order to further his own cause. And this again emphasizes the threat he poses to our constitutional government and our free and democratic way of life with such actions. We must call him out on this and continue to defend our country from the threats of a person who acts more the part of a dictator than the leader of the free world.
It's always interesting to me because a deputy, that didn't get any votes, appoints a man that didn't get any votes, he's going to write a report on me. I had one of the greatest election victories in history. Would you say that's true? They came from the valleys, they came from the rivers, they came from the cities, they came from all over, they voted in one of the greatest elections in the history of our country, and now I have a man, because we have an attorney general who -- nobody can even believe he didn't tell me, but he recused himself -- so I have a man who is a deputy who I don't know, who I didn't know at all, and he appoints a man who had just left my office, I didn't give him the job at the FBI, [James] Comey's his best friend, but listen, you know it better than anybody, you've been very fair in this, but listen, I have a deputy, appoints a man to write a report on me, to make a determination on my presidency? People will not stand for it.
